Yes, Powell is pretty classy, and he's taken plenty of hits in the past year. Mostly from people at the opposite end of the political spectrum from Belafonte. If SI's search facility wasn't so irretrievably lame, I'd dig up some past local opinions.

On the broader topic of racism, W's political operatives know how to play that card quite well. I remember this primary in South Carolina, when the Friends of Ken Lay's $200 million investment in W seemed threatened by the McCain insurgency. W looked real good after Karl Rove wrapped him up in the Confederate flag there, is my recollection.
