In the middle 80's the s and l's were allowed to get into the realestate business. They did this by funding builders as fronts. (much like the special purpose entities that Citicorp used for lending to Enron)

This would be fine with me but it was done with federally insured money. When the congress started to get blamed, they put all the builders out of business and put the s and l's which didn't voluntarily fold, in jail, and increased taxes to cover the loss.

Now since 1999, we have the Bank Modernization bill, (the Gramm, Leach,Bliley Act) which allows banks to do the same thing with your money.

Those that don't study history are condemned to repeat it....
