Jefferson wrote a very similar piece to that on "debt"; not leaving debt to subsequent generations....

Though either one, I think is flawed to some extent. Government and laws are a continuum througout the generations. He treats it as if there is some marked point in time and then leaps forward, e.g., 40 years. There were intervening events within those 40 years.

I also pay some attention to when Jefferson was expressing his opinion, pre and post the Jefferson Presidency. They seem to me to reflect a radically different person. Pre-Presidency...Jefferson said a little rebellion now and then is a good thing [re: Whiskey Rebellion..George Washington's problem]. Post-Presidency, Jefferson was expressing thoughts along the lines that the President should be allowed to break the law on occasion, if the intent is good.....or each branch of the Government should be allowed to interpret the Constitution the way they see it and not interfere with the other branches.

I see Jefferson as an idealist of sorts, pre-Presidency and a little off the deep end post Presidency.
