Slightly OT? - The other element in the market that I would like to understand is the herd mentality that magnifys the swings.

IC industry on verge of 'normal' growth, says analyst

CUPERTINO, Calif.--The slumping IC industry is finally on the verge of reaching its “normal” growth rate--at least according to Advanced Forecasting Inc. (AFI) here today.

The Cupertino-based market research firm bases its assessment on recently published data from the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization, in which IC revenues were up 14% in the month of August, compared to the like period a year ago.

This positive pattern is expected to continue into the fourth quarter of 2002, said Moshe Handelsman, founder of AFI. “The last time the IC Industry passed the +14% growth rate was in June 1999, the early stage of recovery from the 1998 recession,” he said in a statement.

“However, the current situation is quite different from the 1999 upturn due to the monumental heights of capacity buildup during 2000. This generated a recession deeper than in 1985 and continues to haunt the industry today, thanks to several forecasters, among other sources, that mislead the industry," he said.

Though passing the 14% mark is good news to the battered IC industry, AFI predicts “dismal” annual growth for 2002 over 2001. Compared to other industry analysts--who envisioned the annual growth of IC revenues for 2002 would increase in the range of 14% to 20%--AFI claims that it predicted as early as November 2001 that 2002 would end with a negligible change.
