I just read it. It's an old school copy from one of my kids that has been sitting around my house for ages. I kept starting it, bored easily, and didn't get past the first page. It just struck me as a book they give school kids. It's a very short book.

Then I got into the first few pages. The write up in the link is excellent. In WW2 Stienbeck got hassled because he showed the occupying troops as normal human beings. It turned out that's what makes it a classic.

You better hope real hard that the population likes the occupation by troops. The expression is "The flies have successfully invaded the flypaper". (and are therefore stuck). Afghanistan too.

I just don't want to see the USA and UK etc screw up, that's all.
