Yes, it was John....And you are correct...I much prefer the "not in your face" discourse as well. Buckley was wonderful on TV....didn't always agree with him, but did learn ...

But then, remember the old program, Omnibus? I really liked it too, although was very young at the time. Now, even mentioning that program, I must seem old as dirt. <not sure if I'm grinning or not...> Yes...I am....:D

Compared with today's disgusting yell sessions that are billed as debates, Buckley's were civil, you could learn serious stuff from them.

Buckley, I read his novels. I found them a fun read at first but they are much less so of late.

Like all of us, he is getting old. Remember Michener's Novels toward the end? I have just finished the "Utah" section of Ambrose's "D-Day" and have started the "Omaha" section, the toughest to read. That is the "Private Ryan" sequence. All of our "Prep" failed, Air, Naval Bombardment, etc. A real slaughter. Bradley almost pulled us off the beach. It was the Bravery of our Jr. Officers and NCO's that pulled it out.

I have been following the takeover of the Los Angeles Police Department by the former Commissioner of New York, William Bratton. I wish him well. The Rampart Scandal resulted in the cessation of policing of LA Gangs, and I hope he can turn it around. Here is a good article on the situation by an anonomous LAPD Officer. nationalreview.com

I got a chuckle out of your preparations for winter. Mine, of course, is to be happy that the high each day will be 82 degrees instead of 88.

All views should be published here so long as posters wish to do so and they don't violate rudeness, etc. rules. Chomsky, Rush, whatever.

Maybe I'm out of sync with overall thread opinions on this, but I think if someone posts a particular essay from a pundit, they are under some amount of obligation to expound on why they found the article of particular interest.

This is, after all, a discussion thread, not a "blog" for every pundit's point of view.....

This is what torques me off about some posters.. They use this thread to discuss someone else's beliefs, not their own.

And I believe that's unfair to the rest of us who actually spend our time compiling evidence and logic for the views we have (even if they might be the same as the pundits).

It takes little effort for someone to find an article and do a cut/paste.. And I have little respect for those who continuously participate in such a manner, offering little of their OWN perspective.
