You know there was a time when people wouldn't visit this great urban jungle due to fear of being mugged or murdered?

I know - I first moved to the US in 1990 when the murder rate was peaking in Boston.... I spent 3 years doing a PhD there (F-1 visa) -went back to UK (citizen) for 1 1/2 years post doc, back to Boston to teach for 1 1/2 years (J-1) visa. Then to Australia for six years (citizen) and now back to the US in July on an H1-B visa.

Don't worry, David. White people have no problems getting a greencard. My poor brown wife has had to wait 18 months to get her's renewed, with unbelievable red-tape and INS Bullshit. Geez, such paranoia?

She sounds lucky! I am expecting a one year process once initiated as I will be applying under the EB-1 ii category of "outstanding professor" (you don't have to be too outstanding). There is a lot of paper work involved in proving that I am an outstanding professor so the lawyers fees are high. I haven't had time yet to start the requests for letters of support etc. but maybe should see if I can shop around first. This lawyer is the University's immigration counsel and got me my H1-B in record time...
