Pipe's whole argument is that the critical method has failed inside the closed circles of Middle Eastern Studies, so he wished to bring the work to public attention. Is that illegitimate?

No, of course not. But in the present context and asking students to check on them, alongside the unAmerican charge, just asks for crazies. In some ways it's worse than McCarthyism because, to the best of my knowledge about the early 50s, we didn't have this atmosphere of personal violence.

There is a difference between criticism, McCarthyism, and censorship.

Of course. The criticism is not the problem; it's the targeting in this atmosphere that's the problem.

As you can perhaps see, two things in the present atmosphere trouble me the most: the killings of abortion providers based on the website listings and the present level of gun violence on campuses over the past couple or three years--obviously Arizona today.
