<<Some foreign teachers adapt pretty well to life over there. Accommodation is provided free of charge. Food is fresh and good and very inexpensive. Wages vary from place to place. A friend of mine (a retired Canadian high school teacher) told me he received a paltry C$700 a month! Air fare to China is paid by the employer. >>

If one can bank near even C$600 each month for a year while getting paid to see China,(& perhaps even spread a bit of the good word of western "free markets") I'm not sure I'd call that "paltry".

Richnorth, Nope, I make $700 on a good day of network installs.
But a retired person with teachers pensions, + Canada pensions +banking the $700 can pile up cash fast that way. Someone who does that for 2-3 years can end up that way. Why does your friend do that? surely he can do the same in Japan and get a load more cash per month...local cost of living is sky high i Japan, so he may end up with less after all that.

Bill

$700 a month sounds pretty good vs the average monthly wage of $150 for a factory worker. Apparantly, the average migrant farmer earns about $350 a year. They are the ones that help to keep wages at the factories down. Litterally millions of them would like to work in the factories. With the quality of goods and services coming out of the Chinese factories growing exponetially, i figure this is what may eventually collapse the Japanese and American economies. The yen and greenback must come down in value dramatically if the two countries are to survive.
