Taiwan Acer's net profits rise from year ago

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Acer Inc, Taiwan's largest personal computer company, said on Tuesday it made a net profit of T$5.012 billion (US$144 million) in the first three quarters of 2002, up sharply from T$619 million a year ago.

That translated into an earnings per share of T$2.57 for the January-September period, compared with a profit of T$0.16 per share in the corresponding period a year earlier, the company said in a statement.

For the third quarter alone, Acer earned a net profit of T$523 million, the company said. Third-quarter earnings were up 57 percent from T$333 million in the second quarter.

No year-ago comparative figures were available as Acer in September last year began to release sales that excluded its contract manufacturing arm, Wistron, and then later merged with its distribution arm Acer Sertek in March.

As part of a restructuring, Acer split itself in two in late 2000: one half dedicated to Acer branded products and the other -- Wistron -- to contract manufacturing.

The restructuring makes it difficult to make financial comparisons from a year ago.

Moreover, Acer said it expected sales from brand operations to rise 20-30 percent in the last three months of 2002 but it did not specify whether the growth would be on year or on quarter.

It also expected consolidated global sales to reach T$80 billion in 2002. No year-ago figures were available.

The company released the results before the market opens on Tuesday. On Monday, Acer shares closed down 0.6 percent at T$31.90, underperforming a 0.82 percent rise on the main TAIEX market.
