Antara - The Indonesian National News Agency via NewsEdge Corporation : 10/27/2002

Balikpapan, Oct 27 (ANTARA) - State telecommunications company PT Telkom will serve 60 percent of its consumers with the code division multiple access (CDMA) system instead of the cable system for efficiency starting this year.

President Director of PT Telkom Indonesia Kristiono told newsmen here Sunday at a function presenting awards to the winners of a science olympiad held by Telkom's Kalimantan regional division.

"The investment cost for the application of the CDMA system is lower than that of the cable system and the former is able to manage more telephone lines," Kristiono said.

He pointed out that PT Telkom is ready to invest US$80 billion in 2002 for the CDMA system application with a target of obtaining 40,000 consumers.

Kristiono said the CDMA system would help consumers send information and data faster, guarantee the flow of information and provide clearer telephone voices.
