Bob, a good recovery catalyst for an industry is useful new technology. Waht do you see in the car industry.

One thing that springs to mind is the use of diesel fuel. I don't think this has caught on in the US but it is about 50/50 in Western Europe new car sales.

It has been explained to me that the petrol car engine has had 100 yrs of fine tuning and optimisation but this work has, comparatively speaking, only just started in the diesel realm. Yet diesel fuel is already beating petrol in price/performance. I am told to expect some rapid advances in this area.

Personally, I hate the idea of ever owning a diesel car and will resist due to the smell and the harmful exhaust (harmful to humans but apparently less harmful to the planet). But it has caught on in Europe due to the economies it can bring to the driver. What do you see here?

"smoke and mirror claims of option expense issues, pension plan issues etc."

so you don't think these are issues? I guess we all just believe what we want to believe

You have no problem with pro-forma earnings? You have no problem with massive debt? You have no problem with valuations still being historically high?
