Just look around you on SI.

The proof is in the reality.

The amount of hostility, name calling, threats, here are totally out of proportion to anything that would happen in 3d life. So, I would add, is the opportunity for productive and constructive dialogue.

It has frequently been noted that people are much opener to share things in anonymous situations, such as to a stranger on an airpane. But those are generally one on one and short term interactions. The Internet is a huge and ongoing community of virtual strangers.
