When I was a child, long distance telephone calls were an EVENT in our lives. We prepared for them for days, thought about what was important to say and what could wait for a letter, how to condense things into brevity to save money (they were quite expensive, realtively speaking, back then), often arranged the time of the call by letter first -- we'll call you on Sunday evening at 7:00 to discuss our plans for your visit, etc.

Very much different from face to face interactions.

read the EB White essay. Very interesting. And that was in the 40s, but still many people visiting the Worlds Fair had never made a long distance telephone call.
