(COMTEX) B: Goldcorp Inc. Fined $225,000 for Health and Safety Violation
B: Goldcorp Inc. Fined $225,000 for Health and Safety Violations

RED LAKE, ON, Oct 29, 2002 (Canada NewsWire via COMTEX) -- Goldcorp Inc., a
Toronto-based mining company, which owns the Red Lake Mine Mill in Balmertown,
Ont., was fined $225,000 on October 24, 2002 for two violations of the
Occupational Health and Safety Act that resulted in the death of an employee.

On November 22, 2000, a worker was using a stick to scrape a buildup of
finely-crushed rock on a pulley mechanism while the conveyor was running. The
stick got caught between the pulley and conveyor belt and was pulled into the
mechanism. A screw on the end of the stick got caught in the worker's glove and
pulled the worker into the mechanism. The worker was killed in the incident.
A
Ministry of Labour investigation found a guarding device was in place, but was
not sufficient to prevent access to the conveyor's pinch point. The
investigation also found the worker was not being directly supervised at the
time of the incident, which occurred in the ore-crushing house of Goldcorp
Inc.'s Red Lake Mine Mill.

Goldcorp Inc. pleaded guilty, as an employer, to:

1. Failing to provide sufficient supervision to workers on the night
shift performing ore-crushing operations at the Red Lake Mine Mill.
This was contrary to Section 25(2)(a) of the act.

2. Failing to take the reasonable precaution of ensuring the pulleys on
the No. 2 conveyor in the ore-crushing house were sufficiently
guarded. This was contrary to Section 25(2)(h) of the act.

Justice Peter Bishop, of the Ontario Court of Justice in Red Lake, fined the
company $125,000 on the first count and $100,000 on the second count.
