Why disturbingf?

They were an independent nation just as we were. They had a different form of government than ours. I prefer ours, but I don't claim any right to impose my preferences on them. And indeed, their system had some advantages that ours didn't.

Yes, it also had its terrible side. As our country has had. And still in some areas of the country does have.

When the USSR tried to convert to democracy, a significant number of their citizens voted the Communists back in and longed for the return of their communist government.

There is, IMO, a difference between loving one's country and being blind to its faults.
