Tsunamis are serious theats but there is no way to know when one of large size will happen either from an earthquake or a meteor hitting the ocean. At least Manhattan has Long Island sheltering it to the East which should take the brunt of any large Tsunamis. Yeah there would be water sloshing around New York Harbour but fairly moderate compared to what would happen on the South Shore of LI. Big Tsunamis have hit Sydney in the last thousand years, going right over the Sydney heads. Again the city itself would suffer flooding but not the direct hit. But Manly, Bondi etc. better watch out! David

It would have a wavelength of 30 to 40 kilometres (18 to 25 miles) travelling westwards across the Atlantic at speeds up to 720 km/h (450 mph) towards America." i guess i should get my surfboard waxed! although it's probably hard to maintain balance at 450 mph on a 2000 foot wave (except in the movies!)... i heard that during the last big tsunami to hit Hawaii, initially water was sucked away from the shore really quickly, like extremely low tide, leaving all these fish floundering on the sand. the villagers were lured out to the sand by this, and went out to pick up the fish like it was a windfall. then the tsunami came in really quick and they didn't even know what hit them. apparently the audible warning system was broken, or else there had been too many false alarms, so people were caught unawares.. i heard that tsunami started in South America or some such place. (now somebody can go find a website for this for our edification.) But researchers caution that such a catastrophe may not occur for many decades. oh, that's reassuring!
