"never before in America has what they call "forting up" been as widespread, and not just among the rich.

Forts have been common in North America from before the USA existed.

First, most of this material is 4 or 5 years old, and therefore may easily be dated. Even the Crime Doctor piece is copyrighted 1996, originally, that is 6 years ago. Second, who cares? Should I criticize you for living on Mercer Island, which is an isolated, if not gated, place? Third, how less than 9 million people out of about 300 million make a meaningful dent in demographics beats me. What, that is between 2 and 3% of the population? No wonder I run into so few.

I never considered taking a pair of fingernail scissors on an airplane a civil liberty. And, in fact, it is not. The airlines can refuse service to anyone, and therefore can stipulate their security requirements.

Yes, we have very high incaceration rates. On the other hand, our rate of incarceration is still less than 1% of the population, and therefore cannot be used to judge the overall quality of freedom in this country. I can tell you that in the opinion of various foreign nationals, from France and Germany, for example, that I have know, that they have the impression of extraordinary freedom, not just legally, but socially.

Anyway, I am still waiting for you to give content to the "piffle"......
