I believe the 9/11 terrorists had a very secure internal sense of what was "right" and "wrong". I am sure they thought they were accountable to Allah. Accountability isn't all it's cracked up to be, as an organizing principle.

This is an excellent point.

Along with it is how we tend to judge historical figures by the standards of today rather than their own standards. I personally don't want my life judged by whatever the world thinks is right in 2300.
