Dividends divert funds from capital investment (internal) to shareholders (external), not the other way around.
I remain under the impression the primary objective of gold mining companies should be gold mining.

Marketing (IMHO) is a waste of money (more so than dividends) for commodity producers.
It belongs further down in the supply chain, paid for your local Zales.

I, too, would agree with Long Gone. Dividend yields are tangible and, if you like gold, you can always reinvest the dividends. Hi tech may be different. Such companies need a nil dividend payout to keep moving on the fast upward escalator. Gold companies could well place greater confidence in their shareholders in the expectation that they will place their capital in the right places.
