Ok if you prefer use Hitler the Germans were very sure too. I am sure they thought it was a good thing to purify the motherland. And in Bosnia, I am quite sure both sides are very very sure it is all the other sides fault, and that morally they are required to obliterate them. If you are looking for moral certainty, no one has more of it than a fanatic. If you take the position that moral certainty is where it's at, you get to have the fanatics on your team. It's as simple as that. Pick any fanatical group you like.

It is uncomfortable to advocate a position that so neatly dovetails with what the 9/11 bombers would advocate. I understand that. So distinguish yourself from them, if you can. They were obviously very certain about the morality of what they were doing. They believed they were going to paradise for it, or made every indication they believed that. So here we have gentlemen with a very strong moral conscience doing something that appears (to me) to be very wrong. How did it happen? They were sure enough of their morality to die for it, and to kill other people. Maybe that is the test. If you are sure enough of your morality to kill other people, you are too sure.
