Good points. It still does not seem to me that "a conscience" is at the "core of it" in your examples.

You accurately point out how loyalty to a moral doctrine might drive someone to a fanatical act; and that we could not prove the person void of conscience. However, in this case I propose the conscience of the person would be challenging him before, during, and after the act of fanaticism...not driving him to it.
