Rally Monkey does not like it when S&P closes down two consecutive days.

He bites hard.

AOL Restates Earnings Downward Twice in a Day
(2002-10-24) -- AOL Time Warner restated revenue down $190 million for a seven month period ending this summer. Then when Chief Executive Richard Parsons learned that AOL Time Warner stock increased five percent in after-hours trading, the company restated revenue again -- this time down $570 million.

The original $190 million was four times what the market expected, and stemmed from business practices under investigation by federal authorities including the SEC.

Last night's second restatement was "pure AOL marketing synergy genius," according to an analyst with a reputable Wall Street firm. "This is good old-fashioned AOL Business 101. Count the ad dollars twice. Make EBITDA (free cash flow) look like profits. And now this...it's spectacular. Lord of the Rings has no magic better than this."

If the stock increases in trading today, Mr. Parsons said he plans to restate earnings downward again, potentially in the billion dollar range.

"We own brand names, and that's about it," said Mr. Parsons. "Everything else is just clever accounting."
