Yes, I see your point. The sociopathic killer can at least point to a struggle with his conscience as complicit in the act. I think the sociopathy of the thing, however, is the conflict between the doctrine, the act, and the individuals conscience. He could make the claims you suggest in a court of law that his conscience has been cleared. I for one doubt the credibility of such a statement.

The fact that a sociopathic murderer would go to this extreme, however, does little to advance the notion that a consciencious person, living a life founded on principle is equivalent to fanaticism.
