Searle, Wellstone was senator to the state that borders mine. He holds a seat that once was held by Hubert Humphrey, the guy who lost the presidential election to Nixon in 1968. Humphrey was the one who was often referred to as Wisconsin's third senator, though of course each state is only allowed two.

Wellstone really isn't supposed to have trouble winning Democratic Minnesota, but as you know Minnesota voters have been finicky lately, electing Independent Ventura for Governor over said same Humphrey's politically groomed grandson. Also, Wellstone promised never to serve more than 8 years and so this year was supposed to have been his last in office.

Oddly, Minnesota choose Pat Robertson on the Republican presidential primary in 1988 over the steamrolling campaign of then Vice-President George Bush.
