Sounds like a good reason to privatize it, you're finally catching on.

Now there's a post I can agree with.

If anything, social security trust fund surpluses should be used to pay down the existing debt but not be used to balance current budgets.

There's nothing wrong with the federal government borrowing the SS surplus, after all they borrow money all the time from lots of different sources.

The scandal is the Bush administration saying that the SS money isn't really there and can't be counted on for paying benefits. It's only not there if one can't count on the full faith and good credit of the United States of America.

Imagine what would happen if we told our other creditors that they were in financial trouble if they were counting on being paid back the money we had borrowed from them, because that money wasn't really there.

It's an outrage, and the worst kind of economic incompetence for the Bush administration to threaten to renege on the full faith and good credit our country.

Steve

"they spent the money $647 billion for other purposes. "

The 647 billion surplus was invested in government securities, the safest investment in the world.... Of course, the government used the cash it got from the sale, what would you have them do with it???? Buy Brazil bonds???
