I agree that SI is a lot more personal and public and intimate. SI is designed to allow many "emails" to be publicly posted as well as private "emails"--all within a milieu which coordinates a great number of messages for all to see, while allowing some to be kept strictly between those willing to speak privately. Emails proper do not have such an infrastructure; they are more like letters than conversation. Quite different than SI (although you can make copies of emails and share it with others; but in my experience that is usually a business maneuver or sharing a silly joke). Of course, emails have a much more sophisticated screening capacity than SI; which is another way they are different. And (of course) they are not seen and commented upon by dozens of people which is a very big difference.
