Ventura offended by tone of memorial; may appoint independent to seat

Associated Press

Published Oct. 30, 2002 VENT31
Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura says he was ready to pick a Democrat to temporarily fill Paul Wellstone's Senate seat.

That was until last night.

Ventura says he was so upset by what he felt was the partisan tone of a memorial service for Wellstone -- he's now in favor of appointing an independent, rather than a Democrat.

Ventura says he was most offended by a speech by Wellstone friend Rick Kahn at the service. Kahn asked the crowd to ``help us win this Senate election for Paul Wellstone.''

The governor says as an independent, he was offended. And he says it was offensive to anybody who wasn't going to vote for Wellstone, but who had simply shown up to pay their respects.

Ventura didn't mention any names of independents he might appoint. Whoever gets the nod will fill Wellstone's seat until Tuesday's election results are certified.
