Baker climbs to top of Cubs' wish list ------------------------------------------- ESPN.com news services Updated: October 27, 9:39 AM ET espn.go.com The Chicago Cubs continue to set their sights on Dusty Baker to fill their managerial vacancy, and the Tribune Company -- which owns the team -- has reportedly given team executives some deeper pockets to try and get him. Cubs general manager Jim Hendry has reportedly been given the authority to make whatever offer he deems necessary to get Baker, according to Friday's Chicago Tribune. Baker reportedly wants a deal that pays him between $3 million and $4 million per year to leave the San Francisco Giants, who he has managed for the past 10 seasons. Seattle also has interest in Baker, whose contract with San Francisco runs out after the World Series. Giants owner Peter Magowan has said he wants to determine general manager Brian Sabean's future before considering Baker's fate, but isn't ruling out Baker returning to San Francisco. "Maybe it isn't the end of Dusty Baker, the way that everyone seems to write that it is," Magowan told the newspaper. "We'll just have to see." Also Friday, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that if Baker isn't available, a trio of former big league managers are on Hendry's list. They include former White Sox managers Gene Lamont and Jim Fregosi and former Phillies manager Terry Francona. Lamont was Houston's third-base coach last season and has "made overtures" to the Cubs, according to the Sun-Times. Francona has reportedly been recommended to Hendry. Another candidate who has interviewed with the Cubs is Diamondbacks bench coach Bob Melvin, who remains a candidate. ''Nothing's different from when I got here,'' Hendry told the Sun-Times from San Francisco. ''Nothing has changed my plan.''
