I think there it is as valid to speak of a dissident mind as of an artistic ability, a musical talent, a mathematical genius, or other such descriptive terms which indicate -- or suggest, if you prefer, since there is no test or proof in any of the cases -- that an individual's mind is particularly attuned to a particular mode of thinking. There are certainly lawyers I have known who have a much greater natural affinity for "thinking legally" than others. I see no reason why those who commit themselves to the lonely and dangerous path of dissent in totaliarian societies can't be equally recognized? I think it takes a very specific type of person to become a dissenter in the sense that the word was used in the USSR and is still used in societies such as Iraq.
