>>In late 1997, London-based Getty Communications acquired PhotoDisc, a Seattle-based stock-photography company that already was selling images online.

Getty then moved to Seattle and changed its name to Getty Images. Along with Corbis, its crosstown competitor owned by Bill Gates, it began consolidating the industry through acquisitions. Getty today is the world's largest imagery company, with still and moving images sold for use in advertising, newspapers and films.

After a year of weak financial results, primarily a result of steep declines in the advertising market, the company appears to have executed a turnaround. Last week, it reported third-quarter sales of $118.2 million, a 10 percent increase vs. the same quarter last year. Profit was $6.8 million, or 13 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $18.2 million, or 35 cents per share, a year ago.
