Awhile ago - I can't remember when :) - some friends (my age) and I were discussing how bad our memories are and saying we didn't remember our folks having as much trouble.

My view is that they didn't have to remember the same things that are required in today's world. I made the analogy that our brains are just like a computer with a limited memory chip and our brains are filled to capacity with a bunch of information that we have to have just to get around. For instance, their phone numbers were 4 digits, ours are a minimum of 10. If you use a credit card, you have to punch in those numbers first - then you have a 20 digit or more number to remember. Then there's all those passwords, ID numbers (SSN, driver's license, etc), account numbers. Their's was a simpler life devoid of computers and all the conventions you have to remember to use one. I could go on but you get the point and I can't remember any more of the conversation. :)
