N. Korea Thought To Have Long-Range Technology
No Test Expected By U.S. Analysts

POSTED: 10:54 a.m. EST October 31, 2002

WASHINGTON -- The United States believes North Korea is pretty far along in developing a missile that could bring a nuclear warhead to American soil.

Now, it's looking for evidence Pyongyang will conduct a test flight of the ballistic missile.

Intelligence officials say there's no evidence for now to suggest preparations are being made for such a test.

North Korea has been under a self-imposed moratorium on long-range missile test flights since 1999.

But the government says that moratorium is contingent upon talks with the United States moving forward. Relations have been sour since North Korea admitted earlier that month that it was moving ahead with a nuclear weapons program.

The United States also fears that North Korea will continue selling missile technology to nations that don't enjoy good relations with Washington.
