Perhaps Yuan was the name in use before the Communists took over in 1949.

After the takeover, the money was called Ren Min Bi or the People's Money.

By the way, there is an ancient Chinese coin with a hole in its centre --- the Yuan --- which was in circulation ca. 300 B.C.
Perhaps the present Yuan name is just a carryover of the name of the old monetary unit.
