Even if some or a lot of methane is non-biological in origin it is pretty much impossible to think of a way to get non-biological oil. People look for conspiracy theories everywhere. You look for one among the climate scientists, Steve among the oil companies...

The biggest oil deposits on Earth are sitting in place in the thick sediment on top of the Arabian Shield. No subduction involved just a little crumpling to form nice traps from the collision with Asia....There isn't so much oil in the Iranian mountains I believe. It's rare to find oil in the middle of a mountain belt. All the disruption, uplift, erosion, and heating tend to release it back into the environment. An exception is the overthrust belt in the Rockies where the trap is caused by a giant horizontal fault overthrusting rocks on top of the oil deposits and keeping them in place.

Try coal in your car if you think oil is expensive. Or photovoltaics, or wood ethanol, or sheep fat, or sugar beet ethanol, or methane, or a little car, or motorcycle, or insulation, or walking, or a train, or anything else you can think of.

You missed cooking oil. Diesel (and all auto fuels) is taxed so much here, you can save 50% of fuel cost by buying cooking oil at 34p a liter. There is a simple process to change it over to a fuel used in a diesel engine.

It's a nice clean legal fuel in the USA.
