Because Jesus said ? Jesus was often taken to wild flights of fancy , and more often than not was quite beside himself and ranting ...probably due to lack of nurishment and long stays and wanderings in the desert and a tendency to fire and brimstone. Or because the Bible Said ? The Bible is not the only "Holy" book on earth , as we all now know and the church could no longer supress . There is and has always has been wisdom going back farther than the "old testement" and Jesus ( or those that wrote this literature) used parables , moral stories , and metaphors already commonly in usage for many centuries already . Very little of it was original, and not all or any part of this wisdom singularly originating with the Hebrew. They borrowed and absorbed much , your Bible and the Koran are hardly unique. Or afterwords some Council of Rome decreed ? Well we know the motives behind that little show of claiming "Godhead" for the simple Rabbai , leading up to and beyond the Spanish Conquistadores we see this cry of "The One Son of God" , and the body~counts that poured in afterwords. Saving souls ? Not hardly , but adding the most horrible burden and death upon the conquered. And so some well meaning fellow on the internet 2000yrs later is trying to push that old worn out Christian propaganda again of having the keys to some imaginary heaven above ? I see no angels coming down from above to support your position , nor has God shown his face lately to either Jew or Christian in any sizeable numbers , and prophets all too few it seems except for Joseph Smith and the Mormons who came thru all that persecution as one of the most successful of all Christian sects in America. Many moderate Jews take the stand of remaining undecided on the issue of Jesus being "The Christ" , and many do not accept him as such either . The entire body of Islam also does not find the Prophet Mohammed accepting this incredibly imaginative construct of the trinity either, but do give the Nazerene his proper place as a very wise fellow , filled with somewhat of a gift of compassion and holy insight , ie a prophet in a long line of mouthpieces for God , but never God himself . A more reasonable POV. Nowadays and for several centuries now , this veiled threat that you are voicing of people not being "saved" if they do not accept your particular vision and dogma , does not wash nor did it really ever wash . The earth abides , and will continue to do so ....and the galaxies which Jesus had not the slightest awareness of will continue to spin on their way . But do spare us the threats of damnation ...in this Jesus was half out of his mind and completely off base on due to his upbringing in an already long-line of superstitious religious fundamentalism frought with schisms that was the Hebrew religion in those ancient times. They were sacrificing animals by the 100's of 1000's all the way up to the time of Jesus, in the "Great Temple " ... and that should tell you something of this primitive form of God Worship you identify with today . Dress it up anyway you wish ...or simplify and just follow the simple practices , and stop the nonsense of the condemning and the rest of that religious ---->c_____p. regards Mars
