I assure you that ED count is perfectly valid. In Elliott (as I am most certain you know), the upper line is drawn to connect the '1' and '3'. and the lower line connects the '2' and '4'. The origin is completely irrelevant and the entire wave does not have to look like a wedge.

As long as waves 2-4 form the diagonal, the length of the first wave is irrelevant. It's the peak of wave 1,3,and 5 and the trough of wave 2 and 4 that are important. Also, it is possible that the rise off the low is 5 waves and that ED is the 5th wave only which still terminates the pattern.
