UMTS Pioneer Ed Candy

• Back in 1987, he co-ordinated the cross industry EU-sponsored research programme that led to the technical blueprint for UMTS.

• Since then, he has taken a leading role in virtually every major development in European mobile comms:

-> Technical director of the Rabbit project for Hutchison Whampoa
-> Group development director for Simoco (Tetra)
-> Technical director of Orange
-> Inaugural chairman of the UMTS Forum (1996)
-> Hutchison 3G technology director.

Ed Candy and you will find UMTS (Universal Mobile Telephone Service) inscribed on his heart. More than any other individual, the 57-year-old Australian has been identified over the years with the technology that underpins Europe's move into third generation mobile phone services. "It's been a constant thread," he admits, "but there's always been the day job to do."

Back in 1987, he co-ordinated the cross industry EU-sponsored research programme that led to the technical blueprint for UMTS. This was at a time when clunky analogue phones ruled the roost and GSM, today's digital mobile service, was still some years off, so it was a truly visionary position.

Since then, he has taken a leading role in virtually every major development in European mobile comms. Technical director of the Rabbit project for Hutchison Whampoa, group development director for Simoco (where the interest was in Tetra, a sort of 3G for the emergency services) and technical director of Orange, in 1996 he was also made inaugural chairman of the UMTS forum.

In 2000 he rejoined Hutchison as Hutchison 3G technology director. Last year he predicted that the company (now called "3") would meet its deadline of autumn 2002 for inaugural UMTS services and, indeed, the first 1,000 handsets are in the hands of customers in the UK and Italy. A further 50,000 for each country are promised by the end of 2002.

The jury is still out on whether the public really wants 3G services, but in getting the technology to work, Candy has done his part. It is, he says, "a dream realised. My vision was to sit on the top deck of a bus in Oxford Street and see people looking at pictures on their phones as part of their everyday lives. <<
