I have to side with the Star. This was not tabloid journalism, it was responsible journalism. The only thing I think I might have done differently in their position was not put it on the front page, which appears to glorify it, but print it somewhere in the body of the paper so it was part of the public record but didn't appear as though it were being used to boost circulation or promote the paper.

Other than that, it's a document that should be publicly available. People are inevitably going to speculate about how a thing like this could happen, and the statements of the perpetrator, whether we take them at face value or not, are an important component of that discussion.

I haven't read the letter myself, only the brief exerpts, but I might if time allows.
