Right, then esplain to me Lucy why Intel went Orbital when HP spilt the beans about the shortcomings of I and didn't refer to it as "test" chip until a year and a half and only after it was made public that only 6000 had been shipped and all those had been given away.

I can only speculate, but I'd guess it's a simple case of marketing versus engineering. All of the engineers on the project had to know exactly what the problems with the chip were, and they had to know that the Itanium 2 would take care of those problems. (Of course, then one can also speculate about professional rivalry between design groups as the McKinley was at least initially an HP-led design).

*shrug* It may have taken them a year and a half to admit it publicly, but I think everyone at Intel actually involved in the project, and all senior management knew it was a "test chip". If marketing could actually sell it, fine, but I honestly don't think they were banking on that.
