Thanks so much. I appreciate. I think I understood the "piercement" story (a different way of saying I did not get it;) but I'll go through the Atwater's movies.

I still have a dream now and then of calling my friends at EMR CanMet and tell them I'd work a summer month for nothing, as long as they'd let me sink my teeth in some interesting crazy geological mineral whatever problem... Sigh... back to Europe.

Sounds complicated but basically confirms my answer to Maurice - big oil deposits are found in thick sediments on the margins of continents where they experience a little crumpling/uplift etc. from the mountain building which helps oil migrate get trapped etc. but they aren't usually in the middle of orogenic/subduction zones....
