Kirk,

It appears that HP made the error. Here's another report:

Global Q3 PDA shipments revised sharply down as HP lowers figures - Gartner

LOS ANGELES, Oct 31, 2002 (AFX-UK via COMTEX) -- IT research firm Gartner Dataquest revised sharply down its preliminary third-quarter data on the personal digital assistant market after Hewlett-Packard Co lowered its own PDA unit shipment results in a move that knocked HP from the second market share spot to the third.

According to the revised data, Gartner now puts third-quarter unit shipments at 2.554 mln, down 2.4 pct from 2.618 mln in the same quarter a year ago. Previously, Gartner had said global PDA shipments rose 0.9 pct.

HP cut its prior shipment data by 89,000 units for the quarter due to a discrepancy in its tally, Gartner Dataquest principal analyst Todd Kort said.

"Based on this new information, market growth rates have declined, showing that the PDA industry is struggling more than previously reported," Kort said.

Based on the revised figures, Palm Inc led global PDA shipments for the three month period and took a 31.7 pct share of the market, up from a 28.8 pct share in the comparable quarter of 2001.

Sony Corp followed with a 13.5 pct market share -- up sharply from 3.5 pct -- and HP came in third with an 11.5 pct share of the market. In the same quarter of last year, HP had a 12.1 pct market share.
