I agree, there were no membership lists, and Jesus and the disciples had the concept that the whole world should be part of the church.

It might be worth noting that if they had succeeded, the WTC would still be standing.

see the benefit in getting to know people and forming a community of trusted
friends who you know to stand on common principle.
