WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Under pressure from his fellow commissioners, Chairman Harvey Pitt asked for an internal investigation Thursday into the Securities and Exchange Commission's selection of William Webster to run the new accounting watchdog group.

1. Pitt wants to know why the SEC selected Webster.

The probe -- to be lead by the SEC's Inspector General Walter Stachnik -- will examine Pitt's own role in the process following word that the besieged chairman had concealed information from the other four commissioners about Webster's role as head of U.S. Technology's audit committee.

2. Someone said that Pitt concealed information about Webster's role.

Aside from the hearsay, how can 2. be related to 1.?

It's a form of X said that Y believed Z, so when Y denied believing Z it must be concluded that X is a liar.

In any event how can Pitt conceal information about what he doesn't know?
