In Calif., there is sales tax on gold and silver coins. I'm not sure if it applies to the bullion too. I have found it slightly cheaper to order coins out of state, even with the S&H charges.

Good point, though like i said it depends of your aims in your physical acquisition program. Say you wanted 1kg, you `d pay no commissions and somewhere around a one percent premium over spot for a 1 kg bar. Can`t do that with coins but they are not exactly the same so that is expected. Same stuff inside but not same purpose entirely. There are a number of issues with bullion vs coins, and since this is not a gold forum, i will stop here. USA Gold Forum on the web is a good place to follow these debates.
