Yeah, cognizant thinking is a purported part of our evolution. And, we still have an appendix (as well as a Gustave) for some reason. This is probably stretching the topic, eh? I'll quit, first. <gg>

"But I guess such beliefs bequeath an evolutionary group-bond advantage against competing groups."

I'm kinda thinking this John Whatever-before/Muhammed did it "just because" rather than for any religious (or monetary) reasons. "Just because" life was failing him with the failed businesses, failed marriages, failed child arrangements. Not a quite a failure in his (military) service, yet not outstanding; just "there".

He didn't seem to be involved in any "camps" for "fervent indoctrination". He was just a dude looking for something. The Islam thing may have fulfilled one comparmentalization, but it wasn't the impetus of his life.

Witness something as oddball as William Ligue who did that thing with the baseball coach last September in Chicago. Ligue wanted to be noticed. Sadly, same thing here on a much bigger scale. And the kid? Same thing as Ligue's kid, who participated. Looking up to a "father" figure. All four are pretty whacked out.
