CommWorks Wins With Unicom
11.01.02

BEIJING -- CommWorks, a 3Com Company (NASDAQ: COMS - message board),
announced today it has won a major contract with China United Telecommunications Corporation (China Unicom) to provide data network infrastructure equipment to deliver high-speed mobile data services to subscribers. The advanced technology will provide China Unicom customers with a faster, more streamlined way to access information and applications via their mobile handsets.

CommWorks will provide the largest percentage of the mobile data network equipment that China Unicom will deploy - nearly 50 percent; with deployments in the capital city of Beijing, the populous Yangtze River delta region, including the city of Shanghai, and other major cities and provinces across China. CommWorksR equipment will operate alongside radio access network infrastructure from major vendors working on China Unicom's Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) 1X network.

Today, China Unicom has more than 3.6 million wireless subscribers on its CDMA network, and is adding some 600,000 new CDMA customers per month.

"China Unicom has built its reputation as an innovator in the global communications industry, and we are delighted to expand our longstanding relationship with them," said Dennis Connors, president, CommWorks. "CommWorks technology is helping China Unicom to deliver new, enhanced data services that go beyond basic Internet access and simple messaging. Users will choose from a broader and more compelling menu of services, designed to change the way people communicate and conduct business."
