Interactive entertainment software manufacturer Electronic Arts saw open interest at its December 70 call skyrocket from 2,168 to 5,797 contracts yesterday. A block of 1,500 contracts changed hands at a price of 1.80, which was between the bid and ask prices. The equity's SOIR checks in at 0.61, which is lower than 60.4 percent of those taken over the past 52 weeks. Pessimism has been building toward the shares, as the stock's short interest has increased by 42 percent since July to 13.7 million shares. It would take nearly three days to cover all the short positions at the security's average daily trading volume. The company reported second-quarter earnings last week of 34 cents per share, blowing past the Street estimate of 17 cents per share. ERTS also announced that it expects to meet or beat the consensus estimate for the third quarter. Technically speaking, the security has been a strong performer. The stock has been steadily climbing higher on support from its 20-month moving average. Since May 1997, ERTS has suffered only a handful of monthly closes below this trendline.
