The moving finger writes; and having writ,
moves on, nor all thy piety or wit
shall lure it back to cancel half a line
nor all thy tears wash out a word of it.

- Omar Khayyam

Metaphors & Meaning

The moving finger : Cosmic laws governing all activities and movement in universe, fixes individual destiny in accordance with karmic quality.

Having writ, moves on : Cyclic evolution, in which the general pattern of the ages is repeated endlessly.

Nor all thy piety nor wit : A specific karma can be eliminated only by an equivalent opposite force or by elimination of ego. Piety, morality or intellectual efforts alone cannot appease it. Self realization is the only way to cancel karma's operation.

Nor all thy tears wash out a word : Tears, indication of self pity, dilute person's ability to overcome difficulties. Neither self pity, nor remorse can cancel consequences of past actions which are set into motion by the individual himself.
