I have friends in NYC in all different fields, mostly in some sort of art, publishing or advertising. Quite a few of them have been laid off and quite a few of their friends have been laid off and looking for work longer than a year. They've managed to survive with a combo of free lance, unemployment checks, savings and cashing in 401s.

OTOH here in Maryland I don't know anyone who has lost their job and my husband and lots of my clients are complaining about too much work. NYC is clearly in a completely different situation then we are with the combination of the dot bomb bust and collapse in advertising revenues, 911 and falling stock markets. Its like it was hit with the perfect storm.

Incidently one of the reasons my husband has had so much overtime is directly related to 911. He worked on a small pox facility and an anthrax facility already in the past year, both being built on an expedited schedule. Those jobs and a hell of a lot of hospital expansion going on.
